The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is providing its perspective on data published today in the American Journal of Psychiatry on the potential risks of stimulant medications used to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.
Given the limitations of this study’s methodology, the FDA is unable to conclude that these data affect the overall risk and benefit profile of stimulant medications used to treat ADHD in children.
Therefore, the FDA believes that this study should not serve as a basis for parents to stop a child’s stimulant medication. Parents should discuss concerns about the use of these medicines with the prescribing healthcare professional. The FDA’s summary of the study and its limitations, and our recommendations for healthcare professionals are provided below.

Call for Research proposals in the field of Genomics and/or Bioinformatics.
The Horizon programme is set up as a breeding ground for talented researchers active in the scientific fields of Genomics and Bioinformatics. Within the Horizon programme, the Netherlands Genomics Initiative (NGI) aims to 1) focus on the development of individual talented researchers, 2) support innovative research, and 3) stimulate valorization of research results. Horizon aims to offer early career genomics and bioinformatics researchers attractive career prospects within academia and research institutions. In line with the NGI strategy, this will be done by creating new positions. Moreover, in view of the imminent prospect of large numbers of university and institution posts falling vacant as their present holders retire, universities and institutions acknowledge the need to attract and maintain a new generation of talented researchers. Horizon therefore aims to stimulate researchers towards becoming scientifically independent by setting up or expanding their own research line and research group. Horizon aims to promote and coordinate outstanding and visionary fundamental research by offering researchers the freedom to realize their ideas and concepts beyond existing disciplines. The research supported by the Horizon programme is future-oriented. Researchers are given the opportunity to respond rapidly to new hypotheses or technologies. In addition, the Horizon programme aims to achieve valorization of the results obtained in the research projects. For this, project leaders are expected to adopt an active attitude towards valorization.

Geneesmiddelallergie wordt van oudsher beschouwd als een lastig onderwerp waar ook weinig eer aan te behalen valt als het gaat om diagnostiek en therapie. De laatste jaren is echter op dit terrein grote vooruitgang geboekt; zo is het nu mogelijk om bij een anafylactische reactie op chemotherapie een desensibilisatieschema te volgen waardoor de patient de kuur kan blijven volgen in plaats van over te stappen naar een 2elijns schema. Hetzelfde geldt voor de diagnostiek van allergie voor contrastmiddelen en de rol van genetica bij geneesmiddelreacties.
Op vrijdag 16 oktober in het WTC in Rotterdam (Zaal Staal) praten internationale experts u bij over de huididge stand van zaken. Accreditatie is aangevraagd bij NVALT, KNO, NVK, NIV, NVVA, NVDV, NVZA, KNMP.

Het bestuur van het Nederlands Bijwerkingen Fonds heeft de Leo Meijler prijs ingesteld. Met deze prijs wil het fonds de aandacht voor geneesmiddelenveiligheid, in het bijzonder het optreden van bijwerkingen, stimuleren.
De prijs wordt uitgereikt aan een student geneeskunde, farmacie of gezondheidswetenschappen, die naar het oordeel van het Nederlands Bijwerkingen Fonds in het jaar 2008 de beste scriptie of het beste gepubliceerde artikel heeft geschreven op het terrein van de veiligheid van geneesmiddelen.

De prijs is vernoemd naar prof.dr. Leo Meijler, die in 1951 met zijn boek Schadelijke nevenwerkingen van geneesmiddelen al aandacht vroeg voor een evenwichtige beoordeling van werking en bijwerkingen van geneesmiddelen. De prijs, bestaande uit een geldbedrag en een keramiek kunstwerk, zal dit jaar voor de tweede keer uitgereikt worden tijdens de Lareb Bijwerkingendag die op 12 november 2009 op de Uithof in Utrecht plaatsvindt

Internationaal symposium 'Ubiquitin function in health and disease', Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht. Internationale sprekers waaronder Nobel laureaat Aaron Ciechanover presenteren de nieuwste ontwikkelingen over de rol van ubiquitine in patho-biologische processen.
